You have one job

Is anybody else amazed by all the drama happening in the world this February? We are just in the second month and there’s so much chaos everywhere, from politics to entertainment to fashion. I’m curious to see how the rest of the year unfolds. Now that I’ve gotten my little global observation out of the way, let’s focus on the post for today.

If you ask me for a description for my social life, I’ll say it’s dilapidated and needs to be revamped. It was pretty much in a coma in 2018 if I’m being honest. It’s always a struggle for me to go out especially in the winter months. Being without a car means I have to wait in the cold for the train and bus. Also, I’m on a student budget so I can’t take Uber every time 😩. Let’s face it, i love being cozy so I stay indoors a lot 🤦🏽‍♀️. However, I’ve decided that I’ll make an effort to have a decent social life this year and stop making excuses. It is off to a great start, I must admit. I attended a comedy show with my friends two Sunday’s ago and my calendar looks promising till April, will fill it up as the year goes by. The show was the perfect event for me.

I needed the laughter and aura derived from comedy to clear my head a bit. Anyway, the show got me thinking about comedians and their choice of occupation. You know how people say no job is easy. I’m a firm believer that it is quite difficult to be a comedian. Let’s face it, their job description is literally one line. Make people laugh. How do you do this? The pressure is on when performing live because you know the audience is there just to laugh. You know how in other line of jobs, you can work around your mistakes. For instance, if a baker makes a mistake, you can add some more icing here and there to create a new design. Or how a doctor has different options of medicine to prescribe for a particular sickness or ailment. Also, lawyers have different arguments to defend a case, let’s not forget how dj’s have different playlists to entertain their guests. Comedians do not necessarily benefit from these options. So they have one job basically. Make people laugh! Even if they have a variation of jokes, if they are not funny, it can’t be forced.

There are so many different factors that contributes to the acceptance of a comedian , being vast, versatile and charismatic are my top three qualities I look for in comedians and being funny obviously. Something unfortunate happened at the show, there was this comedian from the United States. Immediately he came on stage, i could tell that I wouldn’t find him funny. Although he’s Nigerian, but he’s lived all his life in America. When he was telling his jokes, the audience couldn’t connect, he was literally begging us to laugh at his jokes. I felt really sorry for him. Brings me back to the point I made earlier about the difficulties involved in being a comedian..

I’ll say, research is an important aspect of comedy. Like in any other field, research should be conducted to have an understanding of the audience. Again, I’m grateful for social media, I get to watch skits (short comedy) every day, the social media comedians have been able to identify their target audience and what they like and they deliver almost every time. I must commend them for the effort put towards creativity and coming up with ideas all the time. It isn’t easy, it’s time consuming, requires lots of editing and let’s not forget the finances included. So next time you come across a skit on your social media, appreciate them, a lot of hard work has gone into the free comedy you watch. Although, I do not find some of the social media comedians funny, I’ll never leave a bad comment on their pages because different strokes for different folks.

Ok back to the show now, overall, it was a success and I’m grateful for comedy, we all need to have a good laugh every once in a while . I got to take a picture with one my favourite social media comedian broda shaggi.

Broda Shaggi

Please don’t judge my picture quality 😂😂. Many people wanted to take pictures with him so I didn’t have time to get good images. Do you think being a comedian is innate or it is a skill developed over time? Thank you for reading and see you next week.
